Friendly Living

You may have first been introduced to our area because of Durango’s tourist attractions. Perhaps you rode the Durango Silverton train. You may have even daydreamed about what it’s like to live here.  For starters, you’ll find welcoming neighborhoods and friendly rural values. It’s said our community has more non-profits per capita than most metro areas. That’s because we’re a caring community, and we look after one another. Most locals will tell you that their friends, neighbors and co-workers are like extended family. Simply stated, we enjoy neighborly living.

Education & Healthcare

Another big draw for our area is Fort Lewis College. It gives the city of Durango a youthful, vibrant energy. It’s one of the largest employers and launches careers for its students through top-quality academic programs. For K-12, we have educational choices from award-winning public education to high-performance charter schools. We also have tailored programs for more specific learning styles. Read more about our educational choices here.

In addition to educational choices, we have outstanding options in healthcare. The area boasts nationally rated hospitals, Mercy Regional Medical Center and Animas Surgical Hospital. Plus, there is a range of superb medical clinics, specialists, urgent care centers, mental health professionals, holistic health services, dentists, nationally renowned surgeons and facilities dedicated to women and children’s health. Regardless of whether you prefer a more natural route or traditional practices, our healthcare professionals bring back the true essence of the hometown doctor. Read more about our top-rated healthcare here.

Move to Colorado: Our Unique Landscape

In each direction from La Plata County’s main hub of Durango, CO, a unique landscape provides opportunity for diverse living. You can reside in the ruggedness of the San Juan Mountains to the north or experience the arid deserts of the south/southwest that showcase the region’s world renowned Ancestral Puebloan heritage. If you enjoy ranching or agriculture, East County may be perfect for you, or Durango’s valley floor, bordered by majestic redstone cliffs. West of Durango is for the eclectic individual because it offers a little of everything, including Hesperus Ski Area, a hometown hill with night skiing. For quality living the decision to move here is easy. Deciding where to live is the hard part.
